Liam's Prelim Task Evaluation

Task Brief: To create a short video in which a character opens a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair to opposite another character with whom they share a few lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot reverse shot and 180- degree rule.

In our prelim task we successfully showed a character walking down a corridor where he opens a door, this where the match on action comes into play. In this scene the shots are cut smoothly together to create a sense of continuity, the subject is in motion before the cut and this motion carries on when it cuts to the close-up shot of the hand. However, the scene where the character crosses the room is very short and very hard to distinguish. The next scene the shot reverse shot and 180-degree rule are clearly visible and are very effective in creating a sense of continuity within the scene.

To improve the prelim task I would have considered the lighting in each shot because some of the shot reverse shot are darker from one side than the other and this breaks the continuity of the scene as it looks like they’ve been filmed at different times. Another improvement would be to increase the duration of the prelim task by creating a longer dialogue and using a larger space to film.

Prelim Task Evaluation

Task Brief: Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom he/she then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

Evaluation:

Our prelim task followed the plan we had and included the relevant shots. We started our prelim with a crotch shot (cutting of the head to add suspense). We continue to add suspense by only showing certain parts of the body by using cut in shot. We then use Over the shoulder shots to show conversations. We also used another cut in of the envelope to show its importance.

The thing we did the best was using shots to create the suspense and interest as the audience would want to find out what happens.

Something that went wrong was our change In positioning of liam when he was walking down the corridor.

THIS IS OUR PRELIM TASK

Prelim Task Evaluation:
Task Brief:
Continuity task involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character, with whom he/she then exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot reverse shot and the 180-degree rule.

Evaluation:
In our prelim task I think we did it quite well as we reached all of the criteria to an acceptable standard. We had a character walk to a door with a close up shot of his hand opening the door, this is followed by a mid shot of him walking across the room and then he sits down opposite the fellow character. The shots are edited together to try to create a sense of continuity however because they aren’t very long they move very quickly – this is something that could be improved. Then they exchange a few lines this is done by shot reverse shot over the shoulders of the characters but also the 180 rule is followed during this. Therefore by doing this we followed the criteria to the best of our abilities, however there are improvements that need to be made.
Improvements that could be made to this video are that it’s too short so that the shots move very quickly therefore we need to make the video longer to be able to make it run more smoothly. Next time if we need to use a 180 reverse shot for dialogue we need to make sure we include more dialogue to make it long.

Shelby's Prelim Task Storyboard and Script

This is my storyboard for the prelim task - showing each shot (over the shoulder, close ups)

Our prelim task didn't have a very long script as it wasn't a long video and wanted to focus on the shots. each line is supported by the type of camera shot
