Liam's Prelim Task Evaluation

Task Brief: To create a short video in which a character opens a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair to opposite another character with whom they share a few lines of dialogue. This task should demonstrate match on action, shot reverse shot and 180- degree rule.

In our prelim task we successfully showed a character walking down a corridor where he opens a door, this where the match on action comes into play. In this scene the shots are cut smoothly together to create a sense of continuity, the subject is in motion before the cut and this motion carries on when it cuts to the close-up shot of the hand. However, the scene where the character crosses the room is very short and very hard to distinguish. The next scene the shot reverse shot and 180-degree rule are clearly visible and are very effective in creating a sense of continuity within the scene.

To improve the prelim task I would have considered the lighting in each shot because some of the shot reverse shot are darker from one side than the other and this breaks the continuity of the scene as it looks like they’ve been filmed at different times. Another improvement would be to increase the duration of the prelim task by creating a longer dialogue and using a larger space to film.
